I’ve spent most of my day so far working on my first Firefox extension. Just a simple one that rotates through chat rooms on Syndicomm, the little service I run for geeks to hang out in with a good signal-to-noise ratio.

Now that I have a decent grasp on what I’m doing (at least for my first article), I’m working on refining it into one or more “stationery” like packages, where you can just grab this essentially empty extension, then fill in the code and customizations to the XUL. Then I can write some good content for how it all works and why.

Should make for a good first week on the job.

I made good use of my last week of being out of work by watching the entire second season of Lost up to present. I’m finally all caught up with the mysteries of the island.

A month out of work was plenty for me, thank you very much. I start at Mozilla tomorrow, doing some much-needed technical writing. Be nice to be doing that again. Hopefully I can climb the learning curve fast and start being productive.

Why is it that whenever you start a web site (such as, say, a blog), you feel compelled to write content until the content is at least as tall as the sidebar on your site?

I keep looking over at the sidebar on the right thinking my site looks lopsided and that I need to write a post or two until it doesn’t look strange anymore.

Maybe it’s just me. I hope not.

I’m not certain, but my guess is they’d stampede. Or something.

The name “Bit Stampede” is pretty weird; that’s what happens when you spend 30 minutes randomly making up possible domain names for a site until you finally hit one that’s not taken.

Still, it calls to mind the kind of overwhelming chaos that rules the Web. Let’s see if we can beat it into submission…
