TB2 is starting to look a lot better, although I've not put it through its paces yet. I may do a second attempt at this experiment when TB2 reaches beta.

"I’d actually like the top of the folder list box to move down to line up with the top of the message list."

If you want the two panes to line up, remove the Search Bar (View > Toolbars).

P.S. Thanks for documenting your experience with Thunderbird. Like you, I periodically try it out. So far it hasn't convinced me to stay put, although it has promise...

then it's trivial !!! just add a new filter to your inbox catching all mails having a Content-Type field or a body containing "iso-2022-jp" and moving it to the junk folder !!! That will catch almost all japonese messages.

I don't have any friends that send mail in iso-2022-jp, so I'd like messages sent in that automatically classified as junk. :)

No, you cannot assume that a message written in a given charset is always spam only based on the charset. Your Japanese contacts will also send mails in english in iso-2022-jp because that charset contains ascii chars. So a spam filter for a charset like iso-2022-jp should at least compute the ratio between ascii (if existing in that charset) and non-ascii chars and decide if it's a spam or not if the ratio is too low.

> Likewise, I don’t want alerts to pop up every time an account
> connection times out. This happens all the time, and I just don’t
> care. I want it to fail silently, with, again, maybe an icon that
> appears in the status bar that I can click for details on any errors
> that have occurred.

An alternative would be to use Firefox' yellow notification boxes.

Actually, what would be a huge help would be tooltips on each item in the about:config window that would explain what that setting does.

Yay, you're still going strong - cool!

> ...wish we didn’t have to use the about:config type window for so much stuff.
We all want something different. That's the cool part.

It should just get a bit more beginner-friendly and less bugging; like you stated; less OK-popups.

Hey, there we go. Thanks!

This is the kind of thing that makes me wish we didn't have to use the about:config type window for so much stuff.
