Things that bug me: spelling nightmares

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

So I’m at the supermarket yesterday to pick up some eggs, and as I’m walking in toward the entrance, I see they’ve got firewood on sale. Right next to that they have a huge stack of bundles of small bits of wood. Above which is a sign that says “KINLIN.”

When did it become appropriate to totally botch the spelling of words on signs at a place of business?

This, to me, is right up there with naming businesses things like “EZ-Mart”. For goodness’ sake, just spell it out as “Easy Mart.” Seeing “EZ” makes me think the person that runs the place has to be a clueless moron.

This is related to another massive pet peeve of mine. While I have no real problem with using shorthand when doing text messaging on a phone (especially when you’re using a keyboard the size of a saltine), I have a huge problem with people that send real email or even snail mail using abbreviations like “u” and “r” instead of spelling the words out. Are the words “you” and “are” really that hard to type or write?

Ay, ay, iPhone

Wow. That’s pretty much all I have to say about it until there’s more information. The big questions for me are: can I write and install my own apps on it, and can it be used as a modem.

Wow.

I’m really shocked there wasn’t a Leopard demo today. That’s just not right.

Oh… my… god… so… freaking… tired…

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

I’m seriously, painfully tired. This is the kind of tiredness that makes you feel as if your eyeballs were trying to ooze out the front of your skull, and you feel like your face is trying to escape your body. My brain is trying valiantly to function, but it’s a losing battle.

I figure I’ll turn in early tonight, because if I don’t, tomorrow is going to be completely shot.

Hi John

Last week, developer relations welcomed its latest addition, John Resig. John’s a JavaScript guru who’s even written an honest-to-goodness book on the subject. In the not-quite-a-week since John joined us, he’s already started cranking out useful material, and, along with Mark Finkle, our second-newest team member, is designing a great new JavaScript library for extension developers. It’s pretty exciting, and I’m thrilled to have our great team growing even more.

Working the to-do list

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

Well, it’s 2007 now, and since we’re some time away from being ready to seriously delve into Firefox 3 documentation, it’s time to plunge into my to-do list of things I’m not exactly eager to do, but that need to be done anyway.

If anybody has insights into any of the topics on my to-do list, feel free to contribute. This is mostly stuff I will have to do a great deal of research to get prepared to write about, so it will mostly be slow in coming. I’ll also be continuing as always to review wiki updates posted by others.

If there’s anything you’d like to see done in the docs, please let me know. There’s tons to do!
