Eight million downloads. Very, very cool.

The power of open source

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Chris O’Brien of the San Jose Mercury News wrote a great opinion piece about the value of the open source effort that created Firefox 3. You should check it out!

I’m extremely proud of everyone that made Firefox 3 happen, and thrilled to be a small part of it. Great work, everybody!

So, it’s done, then

Firefox 3 is now out the door and ready for download. If you run into delays or server hiccups, just be patient and try again. Demand is pretty high.

Since it rolled out at about 11:15 AM Pacific Daylight Time, it’s already racked up almost 880,000 downloads, and is currently being downloaded at around 7400 downloads per minute.

According to Net Applications, Firefox 3 is already up to over 1.5% of usage share, which is impressive!

Now we press onward toward the release of Shiretoko — presumably Firefox 3.1.

Less than an hour to go!

Firefox 3 ships in less than an hour now. Way to go, everyone!

// MDC.wikiEngine = MindTouch->Deki

The transition of the Mozilla Developer Center to MindTouch Deki is hopefully going to be complete by the end of June. The delays at this point are largely due to my newbie status at managing a project involving this many people; there are steps I simply didn’t think of.

Here’s what’s happening right now:

Quality Assurance
Mozilla’s QA folks are poking at our test site right now, making sure everything’s safe. They’ve found three or so issues that need fixing; they’re all fixed now but not yet deployed to our test site for verification.

Version Control
We still need to get the setup into version control. While we have the trunk Deki repository set up, we have some customizations that need to be dealt with. Additionally, the skin needs to be checked in so that localizers can work on it. I’ve mentioned this before. What’s new is that I believe IT and webdev have now come up with a plan for how to set things up.

Going forward, there are a few other things that will help to dictate when we actually launch:

Firefox 3 Launch
Firefox 3 is due to roll out on Tuesday, June 17th. This is now occupying essentially all of IT’s and webdev’s time, so work on the MDC launch is largely on hold until Wednesday, June 18th. Hopefully then we’ll be able to get enough of their time to get the rest of the work done fairly quickly.

Localization
I hope that we’ll be able to get at least our most active localizations of MDC done to the skin in time for the launch. The delay in getting the skin into version control may prevent this; we’ll see. I don’t think it will take very long for each localization to be done — it’s mostly button names and things like that, which shouldn’t be a big challenge for the folks that normally localize extensive amounts of documentation!

Database Conversion
We’ll need to do one, last, conversion of our MediaWiki database into Deki format. In order to do that, we’ll have to lock down the current MDC database to disallow editing during the final stage of the transition, so that changes don’t get lost in the shuffle. Once we know the date that we will actually do the roll-out, we’ll be able to announce when the current MDC will be locked.

After that, we’ll need to do some testing and be vigilant to be sure everything’s working up to snuff. And, of course, expect lots of blog posts from me on how to work in the new world order!

Charter strikes back

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

My cable modem service failed last night around midnight and is still not back up. Frustrating, to say the least. Right now I’m trying to work at my mother-in-law’s house, where there’s Internet access that works.

I’m starting to wonder if the fact that I keep having trouble with Charter is because searching Google for “hate Charter” finds this blog as the top hit… :)

In more directly Mozilla related news, I hope to have the new MDC stuff into version control so that localizers can work on the skin. I have detailed instructions for how to go about doing it, which I’ll post prominently once the SVN access is ready.

It’ll be installed on Tuesday

Woot!

So… what next?

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Now that Firefox 3 is teetering on the brink of a successful launch, it’s time to turn our focus forward! I’ve created a new page for developers to start listing out the changes for the next release of Firefox, tentatively called Firefox 3.1. If you make any changes that will impact developer documentation, please do add a note to that page to be sure your change gets reflected in the docs.

Must… wait… a little… longer…

July 11th. I have to wait until July 11th to get my new iPhone. Oh, the humanity!

iPhone madness

I want one.

I’m nigh-on giddy with anticipation at the impending WWDC keynote. Less than 12 hours to go now. I expect this is a sure sign of my immense nerdiness, but I don’t care.

I sure hope the rumor that it will be available later this week is true. I’m all set to go!
